Saxon, 39, is running for elected office for the first time. The self-employed music teacher also is the co-chair for Citizens for Better Schools, a PTA officer and a member of several school committees. She has a masters’ degrees from the University of Akron and the Cleveland Institute of Music.
If elected, Saxon said she would focus on making computer technology a priority at every grade level. She said focusing on technology and allowing children to use their own devices to connect to technologies put in place by the district both at home and in the classroom, will provide new distance learning opportunities.
“Our students must not be left behind, both in the country, and in the world,” she said. “We can’t settle for following along, we must lead the way.”
Saxon also said schools need to address the ever-evolving role of educators.
“Responsibilities are greater,” Saxon said of teachers. “We expect them to act as agents of the health department, police department and child services. The pressure on teachers is at an all-time high.”
She said curriculum must be improved and expanded through careful analysis of the budget and reallocating resources without cutting academic programming.
“The voters need to elect me to the school board because the time for change is way past due,” she said.
