Heather Hougland
This is Hougland’s first time running for elected office
If elected, Hougland, 36, said she would like to improve parent-teacher relationships and communication.
“I have had a child at every school at some point and sometimes the communication falls through the gaps,” she said. “I also feel like the board is at times out of touch with things going on at the school, specifically at the high school level.”
Hougland said she would use her position on the board to stand as a voice for those who cannot be heard.
“Sometimes the actual people and community voices get overlooked because people have their own agendas or just want to go with the majority,” she said. “I don’t mind speaking with people and parents in the district to get a sense of what they are really feeling.”
Students having pride in their schools and community are what is most important, Hougland said.
“I feel as if this has been lost along the way,” she said. “We need to be willing to reach out and engage with these students.”
