Elam has served on council the last 18 years of his 39-year residence in the community.
He is retired from 30 years of service with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Lake County Prosecutor’s Victim Assistance Program.
His non-elected experience includes serving on the Parks and Recreation Board and the Planning and Zoning Commission. He attends Mentor United Methodist Church and is involved with Amvets Post 109.
If elected, he vows to do “more with less.”
“As mayor, I will reduce the size of city government by restructuring the administration and will propose the reduction in the number of City Council members,” he said. “(Mentor-on-the-Lake) has one council person per 1,000 residents. The city of Mentor has one council seat per 7,500 residents. Safety forces and service personnel will benefit immediately from these cuts overhead.”
Elam also pledges to improve property values by addressing neighborhood drainage problems and blighted properties. Another goal is to boost business with a “Shop MOL” agenda.
“I will ask businesses how I can help them,” he said.
Elam is married to Rita, and has three adult children and four grandchildren.
